When embedded systems designer Mohit Bhoite heard about SIM-enabled devices that track driving habits, he wanted to see what such a device could teach him about the way he operated his vehicle. So, he rigged a cellular monitoring system in a small box, with an antenna on the side, and mounted it to his front bumper. Mohit’s device detects harsh acceleration and braking and feeds that information back to him.

Maintaining Plant Health

For those of us without green thumbs, a little cellular help can make the difference between a plant graveyard and a happy, healthy garden. Using a connected microcontroller with an SHT3x digital humidity sensor, a low-cost plant monitor remotely measures soil moisture and temperature and can send out alerts via SMS, email, or iOS push notifications.

Automobile Tracking

Jacob Ritter’s Honda Civic is more than 20 years old and vulnerable to theft, so he came up with a device to keep track of his car wherever it might go. He rigged it up using a breadboard, a SIM-enabled microcontroller, jumper wires, and an LED.

Drone Tracking

Lost drones are a big nuisance. From low batteries or strong winds to line of sight loss, a drone can go down and get damaged easily, making it nearly impossible to locate. That’s where cellular connectivity comes in. Using a 3G microcontroller and a GPS asset tracker kit, security analyst and developer Drew Alden designed DroneHome to periodically broadcast its location to the cloud. DroneHome also reports back the 3-axis angle values from the included accelerometer, as well as battery status. For those really hard-to-find drones, the DroneHome user can activate a screaming buzzer can lead you right to your lost item.
